With a storied history dating back over 160 years to the thriving 19th-century Manchester markets, Sykes holds distinction as one of the seafood industry’s most well-established companies. It’s through that legacy that they’ve cultivated their reputation for exceptional quality, attention to detail, and robust packing capabilities.
That’s not confined to a single product offering, either. While you’d expect that capacity from a more specialist producer, Sykes pushes the envelope to stretch what we can expect from our seafood suppliers in the UK. That extends from their signature prawns and whitefish to exotic red snapper fillets and decadent lobster tails.
With a proven track record as trailblazers in the frozen seafood market and a bright future with the construction of their Warrington-based, high-tech packing facility, Sykes look to remain pioneers in the industry.
Of course, while the brand speaks for itself in terms of its prowess and industry standing, Sykes naturally face substantial issues when it comes to safety and security. Chief among those is the risk of criminals and trespassers – a massive concern given that the site sees an astronomical 350 tonnes of seafood packed each week.
Statistics on criminality in the logistics and distribution sector only confirm that further, with cargo theft alone costing in excess of £250 million every year. Sykes occupies a difficult spot in that, too, with food supply chain thefts rising by 29% over the last year of data.
That’s just the surface-level issues. Sykes’s huge output naturally means that there’s likely to be substantial traffic – both foot and vehicle – all of which needs to be effectively, efficiently and professionally checked in and out. Couple that with out-of-hours coverage and patrols of their expansive facilities, and it’s clear why Sykes needed a solution as robust and adaptable as the business itself.
With such a hugely active and fast-paced site, controlling traffic, deliveries, and the overall security of the storage facility became of the utmost importance. That was among the first things we identified as a focus area for security at Sykes, and it quickly formed the crux of the bespoke security we delivered for the site.
We were able to rapidly mobilise a 24-hour gatehouse security solution, with officers available around the clock to allow for the easy and seamless access of all delivery drivers, visitors and foot traffic. That includes keeping a detailed log of all ingress and egress, checking vehicles as they arrive, and ensuring a smooth Banksman operation.
We also ensured a regular site patrol throughout the night. This not only allowed for a more comprehensive security overview of the site but ensured that we were able to cover every aspect that may have jeopardised safety.
Our partnership with Sykes began over a year ago, and since then, we’ve continually provided a service that not only exceeds their expectations but also allows for the smoother and more effective running of their deliveries. Our gatehouse officers have quickly become an integral part of the team and have developed a strong bond with those working on-site.
That’s all at their cutting-edge processing and packing facility in Warrington – an impressive 168,000 square foot facility that could’ve proven to be a challenge to those who wouldn’t take the same approach as us.
With 2025 now well underway and the challenging summer months on the horizon, ProFM are poised to continue delivering that exceptional security, and keeping Sykes’ seafood enterprise safe, secure and flowing.
