Perhaps one of the biggest and most widely renowned names in the luxury chocolate market, Hotel Chocolat epitomises what it means to be a confectioner in the 21st Century. While they’re known for their flagship, upmarket high-street stores and a decadent range of chocolate, there’s far more behind that sweet surface.
With a history that dates back more than 30 years, the award-winning chocolate extraordinaire has enjoyed countless successes in both its retail and commercial endeavours. But it’s arguably outside of the stores where it’s seen the most impact. That’s best exemplified by its launch of “Gentle Farming” in 2021, dedicated to sustainability and improving the lives of farmers worldwide.
Couple that with their 89% recyclable packaging and their literal take on the name with their Anglo-Lucia hotel in the Caribbean, and it’s easy to see how Hotel Chocolat blazes a trail in the confectionary field. But while that forms a smooth and fulfilling centre, the reputation for luxury drives the brand onwards.
While it’s fair to say that luxury chocolate is in demand year-round, there are key moments in the calendar where that demand is likely to skyrocket. Events like Easter, Christmas, Eid and Valentine’s Day mean that the renowned chocolatier sees substantial surges throughout the year, all of which undoubtedly put further strain on their retail stores.
That can bring with it the wrong kind of attention, especially in those busier times. Hotel Chocolat’s desirable locations across major UK high streets – while a signature of their iconic branding – also paint a target for shoplifters, vandals and antisocial behaviour.
That’s only exacerbated by the well-documented rise in theft across the UK. With high-value and highly desirable stock on the shelves, thieves look to disrupt the Hotel Chocolat brand and eat into profits at crucial times throughout the year.
With Hotel Chocolat’s exceptional range in jeopardy from brazen shoplifters, ProFM mobilised rapidly. After consultations with their team, it became clear that flexibility was a crucial element of any security provisions we offered. That’s partly down to the fast-paced nature of retail as a whole, and the changing demand for luxury sweet treats.
That also takes into consideration the location of the acclaimed Hotel Chocolat retail storefronts. These are so often in high-traffic areas and need that visible, recognisable security presence that both acts deterrence to potential criminals and that conveys the sophistication of the brand our officers secure.
We also proposed a more reactive presence. With shoplifting showing a protracted rise across all areas of the UK – and especially in the town and city centres where Hotel Chocolat thrive – we’ve been able to react rapidly to rising crime rates, as well as the latest police data, to provide additional, short-notice cover.
Since Hotel Chocolat’s first enquiry all the way back in 2016, we’ve continually been able to support them with short-notice, ultra-professional security officers. That includes overnight security officers, preventative measures for those areas hardest hit by shoplifting, and a more refined approach to some of the brand’s leading stores across Central London.
It’s all part and parcel of the adaptive approach we take to the security we provide, and it’s provided exceptionally effective for the work Hotel Chocolat do. Not only has it ensured a substantial reduction in theft for those areas grappling with the issue, but it’s also acted as a reassuring presence for the brand’s customers and visitors.
We’ve nurtured that partnership throughout the 8-and-a-half years we’ve worked with Hotel Chocolat, supporting them during some of their busiest periods. We look forward to that partnership continuing long into the future.
